Tour description
Adventure beyond the Treeline and Into the Wild
This journey kicks off at the Höbäcken parking lot. First, we cross the striking suspension bridge spanning the Vindelälven. On the opposite side, the path begins its westerly ascent, navigating through some marshy ground. The trail then weaves its way upward, tackling several steep sections as we climb towards the vast highlands. Exercise caution:rocky stretches within the birch forest can be quite slippery, particularly after rain.
As we leave the subalpine birch forest behind, we emerge into the breathtaking open highlands. Here, the defined track disappears, and we rely on compass or GPS for navigation. We continue westward, eventually joining the legendary Kungsleden, which approaches from Ammarnäs. We follow this trail northwest along a dramatic ridge.
Soon, a sign directs us towards the "Stabburet" rest cabin. If you choose to seek it out, you'll veer left off the Kungsleden. This unique cabin, equipped with a fireplace and basic bivouac amenities, is rarely frequented, meaning there's no clear path – it's a true wilderness find! Nevertheless, it's an ideal spot for a secluded rest or unexpected shelter.
After our break, we rejoin the Kungsleden, which continues its climb to the tour's highest point at approximately 930m, marked by a distinctive stone pyramid. From this vantage, prepare for a magnificent panorama: the Ammarfjäll unfolds to the northwest, while the mighty Riehkiere (4,500 ft) dominates the Björkfjäll to the northeast. From here, the path hugs the steep edge of the Stalluoålggie (3,800 ft) before veering east and descending into the Vindelälven valley. Our final river crossing is another impressive suspension bridge, just meters from the Rävfallstuga, which offers one more chance to pause and refresh.
(For those staying overnight, the wood-fired sauna on the riverbank at Rävfallstuga is a must-try! Be aware that you'll need to chop your own firewood, but a saw and axe are provided.)
Once refreshed, we embark on the final 5-mile stretch downstream along the river, bringing us full circle back to the Höbäcken parking lot.
